Sample Questions

  1. What is the mission of the program?
    • How well does the program deliver outcomes to its clients?
    • Is there a measuring tool that is reasonable for the intended outcomes?
    • Does this program teach the client to become self reliant?
    • Does this program correspond with one or more of the focus areas of education, health, and/or income?
    • Is the client clearly defined?
    • Will changing the condition of these clients have an effect on community level?

    • What is the makeup of your board?
    • How many board members do you have?
    • Do you have monthly meetings?
    • Do you have a strategic plan?

    • How much of the agency budget goes toward the program?
    • How much of United Way’s funds would go towards the program?
    • What are your other sources of income? (i.e. government funding sources, individual gifts, special events, corporate gifts, investment income)
    • Is the agency financially stable?
    • What is the agency’s reserve level?
    • Do you have financial goals?
    • How does the board financially monitor the agency?
    • Do they conduct an annual audit?
    • Did any concerns or weaknesses come up in the audit?

    • Does the agency have the organizational capacity (staff, volunteers, and procedures) to achieve the desired results of the program?
    • Does the agency have a plan for staff turnover?
    • Do they have licensing accreditation for their industry or program?
    • Are they fully insured?
    • Do they use volunteers?
    • Is there a volunteer management plan in place?

Definitions of UWCA terms

Agency- The organization whose primary objective is to provide health and/or human service to the communities in Faulkner and Perry counties

Program- A plan of action to accomplish a specific end.  A plan of action to measure, monitor and adjust to create impact/results in the community.

Inputs- The resources such as staff, facilities, volunteers, and equipment that are dedicated to or are consumed by the program.  Outside resources such as collaborations, service referral providers and community factors are potential inputs.  Also important are constraints on inputs such as laws, contract regulations, zoning requirements, etc., that may impact the use of inputs.

Activities- The types of services the program provides- what the program does with the inputs to fulfill its mission.  Examples of activities include: providing counseling to clients, providing training for clients, mentoring clients, providing meals, on-site support for clients, advocacy on client’s behalf, etc.

Outcomes- The benefits to program participants or changes in KNOWLEDGE, SKILL, or BEHAVIOR, that participants experience during or as a result of participation in the program.  Participants’ outcomes should logically link back to the activities of the program and flow from initial to intermediate to longer-term in nature.
